The U.S. House of Representatives set aside $38.3 million to fight against trafficking around the world during the next fiscal year, which is twice as much as the federal government is currently spending.
This figure is a dramatic increase from the current $17 million that the U.S. State Department has for its Trafficking in Persons program.
The $38.3 million, which is part of the Congressional budget process, must be approved by the entire House of Representatives. The Senate will also have to approve this funding. The U.S. federal budget takes effect on October 1, 2009.
